Minister President of Baden-Württemberg
WELCOME

I have gladly accepted the invitation to be patron of the Japan Karate Association’s 2013 European Karate Championship. I warmly welcome all those involved in the competitions to Constance. The town’s active club members have substantial experience with major sporting major events. In 2006 the town on Lake Constance enhanced its reputation with the successful hosting of the Japan Karate Association’s 2006 European Karate Championship and it is a renowned venue for traditional karate championships.

In 2013 the audience can look forward to seeing more than 250 athletes from 25 countries competing in the Schänzle Sports Hall for the title of European Japan Karate Association Champion. I express my heartfelt thanks to all those responsible for the organization. Many voluntary helpers have already been working very hard in advance of this year’s Junior and Senior Championships.

Karate is a challenging sport. It requires total body control, self discipline and endurance. But even in competition sport, having respect for the opponent is the top priority.

Sport is a school that conveys values, especially to children and adolescents. It integrates and brings people together – regardless of their origin. For this reason too, the promotion of top-level and competitive sports is, for me, an important part of state policy. Therefore, the state government continues to support the Sports Solidarity Pact, and in times of tight budgets, this is a clear sign of appreciation.

I am sure that the Japan Karate Association’s European Karate Championships 2013 in Constance will be a success, and I wish the participants, as well as the public, fair and exciting competitions.
